Chapter 4
(Part 1)
It’s just at that moment Aemilia returned home from her grocery shopping
and she was about to check on Rae’s health, wondering if she had woken up
already.
Aemilia made her way to the
stairs after laying the filled paper bags onto the glass table in the lounge.
It was just then that she heard conversations coming from the drawing room and
she was positive she heard Rae’s voice.
‘So,
she has woken up.’
She made her
way to the drawing room with the intention to give them a surprise. She knew
Neal was in the drawing room too because who else will Rae converse so seriously
in this home. Rae usually converse in a kid-like tone with the kids.
Just then,
the word ‘Asper’ came to Aemilia’s ears, it was a word which could gain one’s
attention. The human beings have long known the history of the war between the
Aspers and human beings, being passed down from one generation to the next. Every
humans knew the capabilities and the supernatural abilities possessed by the
Aspers and every single humans longed to have those powers to their advantages.
However, in
Aemilia’s case, she wanted to save the orphanage finance and thoughts ran in
her mind, asking herself what would she gain if she were to hand in Rae to the
Militia. Despite that, Aemilia somehow couldn’t bring herself to do so because
after living under the same roof for twelve years, there was a bond between
them, like a family.
‘What should I do…? To pretend that I didn’t hear anything or
to…?’
**********
3 days later…
Rae’s health
and condition has fully recovered and she had regained her strength to operate
fully. It was a cold late morning as it was the time for autumn, the late
autumn.
She was about
to set out for work in a music shop in City Square, as a shop assistant,
assisting customers who came to inquire about musical instruments. The reason
why she chose a music shop was because she had a keen interest in music as she
was planning to pursue her studies in a music college but the situation forbids
it. Leaving her with the only choice by self-learning, she practiced and
composed various songs with her harmonica, a gift which she cherished very
much.
‘I’m out!’ Rae
said happily to Neal after buckling her shoe lace and stood up with a woven bag
hang on her shoulder.
‘I will be
home taking care of the kids. Just be careful.’ Neal smiled.
‘I will.’ She
replied with a cheerful smile.
‘Wait, I feel
like…somehow, this is a reverse of gender thingy…’ Neal said shyly, looking at
the marbled floor.
‘Oh come on!
You have Miss Aemilia with you. She will be back soon. You don’t have to feel
like a ‘down-right’ husband.’ Rae smiled as she tapped Neal on his broad left
shoulder.
Neal was
beginning to sulk when suddenly a kid burst in through the entrance, crying and
bleeding badly at his knee. He immediately ran to Rae who was standing close to
the entrance and tugged at her coat tightly, begging and crying bitterly.
A rush of
fear and terror stirred her insides as she knelt to assist the crying kid who
was badly injured. She asked what was wrong as she brought the kid into her
comforting arms, patting his little back softly as a way to offer solace.
‘Aemilia…Aemilia and Daniel…Daniel’ the kid sobbed, trying his best to
control his tears.
‘It’s ok,
it’s ok. Calm down. I’m here.’
It took the
boy a few minutes to ease his sobbing and Rae pulled him away from her slowly
so that she could get a clear view of his cute face where she noticed a small
scratch at his cheek. She suddenly felt rage surging through her, swearing that
she would not forgive the person who did that to a kid.
‘Aemilia…and
Daniel…they are being pursued and hurt by soldiers from the…Militia…’ The kid
spoke through clenched teeth as he controlled his sobbing.
The moment she
heard the word ‘Militia’, Rae was outraged, she could feel the wild fire
burning in her, she was furious.
Immediately
she stood and led the kid to Neal who was standing, speechless by the kid’s
short explanation.
‘Take care of
him. I’m going to look for them and give those soldiers a taste of my fist.’
Rae spoke with fury and burst out from the orphanage’s entrance, determined to
take those soldiers down. She ran along the housing streets like a mad dog,
hoping to get there on time.
She could
literally hear Neal’s shoutings from behind and it grew distant by the time she
was about to enter City Square’s border. Sometimes, she felt like bursting into
the Militia but something was pulling her from doing so. She knew the moment
she steps into the Militia, death’s door is only waiting for her, anytime.
She approached
the City Square’s main street and saw that a crowd had besieged upon the main
attraction of their attention. Rae rushed in, pushing the other observers
politely as she does not want to spark their anger because she did not want
another person to add fuel to her already-burning fury.
The scene
almost broke her heart, the sight was painful and ugly to her because she
couldn’t bear to see a little kid bleeding badly in the arms of Aemilia Paxon
who was badly injured too. She was protecting the little child who was about to
faint any time soon, looking very weak and lifeless. It was Aemilia who was
yelling at the officer, cruel harsh words coming out from her bleeding mouth. And…the
officer who was standing right in front of them was…
‘Zachery Xaver Bishop…’
