Chapter 3 (Part 1)
Paxon Orphanage
Rae was shocked by the news and she just stood by the
doorway, her eyes wide staring at the flat-screened wide television.
The XX-2 Virus was a deadly virus
which could consume one’s mind completely. The process is slow but deadly. Ever
since its outbreak two years ago, almost a thousand citizens died from it and
many live in fear of the virus. The virus was contagious, spreading from one to
the next if not careful and will eventually cause death.
As far as Rae knew, the outbreak
of the virus was because of an accident that occurred in Omega CO, A huge
company that conducted various experiments such as the gene transformation, all
in the field of genetic engineering. The tall uniquely designed titanium-built
building was in chaos the moment their experiment failed and ever since then,
they have been finding a way to get rid of the virus.
Rae had thought of donating some
of her blood as an antidote for the disease but Neal forbids her from doing so
because he knew her secret, that if she donated too much blood, it would only
shorten her life seeing that her vision was already affected. Rae clearly
stated that her vision was not perfect was due to a hereditary disease.
She knew she was going blind
anytime soon and she knew she does not have much time left to accomplish her
mission.
However, she thought Neal going
against her will to donate her blood was relevant to her understanding because
if she were to die soon, she could not complete her father’s mission and she
could not have the chance to find out the truth about her father’s death. Why
did the raid happened on that night and why did the Militia soldiers aimed for
her father?
She thought it how selfish of her
but maybe at least she could donate some, just a little as starter. Rae need
not be afraid of the virus because she knew her ‘blood of miracles’ will do the
protection against the bacteria of the virus and will kill it instantly, making
her immune to the disease.
Feeling the presence of someone by the
door, Neal turned, surprised to find Rae leaning against the door frame, her
eyes only focusing onto the television. She looked a little weak, he thought.
‘Rae?’ he called out.
Rae’s dark blue eyes darted from
the television to Neal’s charming face, looking concerned as he smiled at her.
‘I’m sorry. I’m just shock by
the news.’ Rae said as she helped herself into the drawing room and flopped
down beside Neal.
‘It’s worrying. It’s not safe to wander around in the City Square
anymore.’ Neal said.
‘I think it’s always not safe…for us.’ Rae bit her lip.
‘You have been sleeping for two days, sleeping beauty. How’s your
injury?’ Neal asked, smiling.
Oh, Rae had always thought that his smile was charming and it could melt
any girl’s heart. Nevertheless, she was one of those girls.
‘My injury has healed though it still hurts a little
every time I walk. I guess it will recover completely by next week.’
‘I see. I’m glad you are alright.
I’m beginning to get worry if you haven’t awake from your unconsciousness by
the next day, sleeping beauty.’ He teased and patted her head, messing her
hazel brown coloured hair.
‘Thanks for worrying.’ Rae smiled and reached
her hand out to mess his black hair too. They both then exchanged snickering
glares, wondering whose hair will be messier to which, Rae knew it would be
hers because her hair was medium-long compared to Neal’s.
‘Rae, please be careful, of the
virus and…everything.’ Neal said, looking concerned and serious.
‘Don’t worry, I will. Besides, I’m
immune to the virus. It’s you and the kids should be extra careful.’ Rae smiled
and ruffled with his hair vigorously till his hair was really messy.
‘Yea…’
